Rogers, ‘Chatr prices drop for end of Summer

Rogers have thrown another salvo again at Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. Just in time for back to school. This time round, they aimed at the all time crucial element of price, and they seem to know that by slashing it and keeping it low for a month or so will do the trick, and keep customers happy. While Wind Mobile and Mobilicity have been winning over customers by offering aggressively low unlimited plans, but the newly launched Chatr by Rogers came out boldly and indeed did what it is mandated to do: Kill the competition and clear the way for Rogers to continue enslaving, pardon the typo… we mean “saving” Canadians from high prices. It did this by cutting all handset prices to some customer friendly levels. Until September 30th, here is what Chatr will be asking you to pay for their devices:

Nokia 1661, “The Essential”is now $50(initially $60)

Nokia 2680, the “Slider” is now $80(initially $95)

Samsung Gravity, “The QWERTY” is now $110(initially $130)

LG GB125R, “The flip” is now $50(initially $75)

Perhaps Chatr is countering the recent reductions also made by Public Mobile and Wind Mobile? Or it could simply be a promotion for the back to school session. All the same, Chatr indicated that it was just a Handset sale to mark the end of summer.

Compatible aws phones are here for Canada and the US. The AWS phones are either unlocked or carrier locked, they work on a frequency of 1700/2100 MHZ not found in “older” phones, because it is a fairly new standard in 3G phones. Everyday more manufacturers are releasing AWS compatible phones, Google was one of the first to support AWS with the Nexus One, and since then there have been many rumors that apple will follow with the iPhone AWS compatible version. That could mean it would be available from T-mobile in the USA. And in Canada, that could mean Wind Mobile could also carry the AWS iPhone.

New entrants in Canada like Public Mobile have discovered some business meaning in the magical word, free. And when this is integrated with percentage figures like “50% off,” customers will definitely want to have a look . “50% off select phones + your first month free” is what Public Mobile is promising customers. If you are wondering what to do with the money you are going to save from this offer, Public Mobile have been kind enough to give helpful tips like paying bills and treating friends to a lunch. But they warn you to make haste and take advantage because you will not benefit from the offer after September 12th (subject to availability of stock).

Blackberry Torch 9800 Canada Launch on September 21st

BlackBerry fan? Get ready for the Blackberry Torch 9800 Canada Launch! For sometime now, there has been word around pointing to various dates as possible days for the Canadian launch but it was not exactly official. Now Blackberry seems to have made everything ready and they are set to declare the launch parties officially open on September 21st. According to sure sources, the parties will commence in Toronto on September 21st before proceeding to Vancouver and Montreal on 22nd and 23rd respectively. We certainly know that a launch and a release may not mean the same thing, but chances are high that this occasion may also serve as the official release of the Blackberry Torch 9800 in Canada…

Not much information has been given about the launch but it is understood that those attending will get a golden opportunity to get first hand information about the Blackberry Torch 9800 and the new BlackBerry 6 Operating System. Research In Motion (RIM) will also be doing one or two things like giving away 25 products in every launch as a way of igniting interest. RIM is likely to dish a minimum of 75 devices to welcome the Blackberry Torch 9800 in the Canadian market.

There are already reactions from fans and foes alike about this launch. Chatr, Rogers’ mobile phone & wireless company kills the competition

So in June (2010) Rogers decided to remind Wind Mobile and Mobilicity that it exists and they should not try to “mislead” clients (read Canadians). As you know, it did this by launching Chatr; a company they said is just a “new mobile phone brand to focus on the growing talk and text category”. But we know the real focus of Rogers was to kill the fierce competition coming from the new boys in the market: Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. And if killing the competition was not the focus of Rogers, what meaning then can you make from the words of John Boynton, the Rogers’ executive vice president when he said that “Canadians want to use their handsets for voice and text only but want a network they can trust”! In other words, what did he imply by “….a network they can trust”? Was he trying to say that Canadians didn’t trust the network platforms for Wind Mobile and Mobilicity?

Rogers has managed to do what we can comfortably describe as a ruthless surgical operation on two young boys trying to enter the Canadian communication manhood. Unfortunately the “King” of this manhood (Rogers) is not ready to receive them and instead has arranged a package of vital lessons including targeting the very locations targeted by Wind Mobile and Mobilicity. Seemingly, the strategy of Rogers is to come up with plans that are lowly priced with cheap phones without compromising the quality. We sincerely apologize for positively using the words Quality and Cheap in the same sentence but hey, Rogers know better!

Unlimited Talk and Text
The Unlimited talk and text market is widely seen by the players as cheap and hence has the potential of attracting many clients due to the flexibility it presents. When Wind Mobile and Mobilicity entered the market in late 2009/early 2010, they went straight into this market and gave it 100 percent focus. The launch of Chatr with a focus on this very market was no surprise therefore, even though Rogers insist the launch and target have always been in their plans.

Why is Chatr bound to kill the competition completely?
The Rogers network gives Chatr a clean advantage and lets it trounce on the competition quite quickly. As Wind Mobile and Mobilicity concentrate on building and refining their wireless networks around the country, Chatr will be smiling on the Rogers’ network which has an extensive national coverage. John Bitove, the Mobilicity chairman is said to have threatened to file a complaint against Rogers for what he described as an attempt to kill new competitors in the wireless mobile. We cannot establish whether this complaint was filed but it is clear that by effectively using Chatr, Rogers has come out strongly to muscle out Wind Mobile and Mobilicity in an effort to fight off the competition. Industry Analysts say this is a test of Rogers’ strength and we just have to keep an eye and see how the new entrants battle it out with the giant Rogers.

Samsung Galaxy Apollo coming to Canada

It had been rumored that sometime towards the end of July, that the 720p HD recording capable Samsung Galaxy Apollo would launch with Telus. Seemingly, the rumor is now getting more refined and maybe closer to the truth with the latest report by Mobilesyrup indicating that Telus will soon be including the Samsung Galaxy Apollo in their product list. Perhaps as you talk of Bells “Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant” and Rogers’ “Samsung Galaxy S Captivate” you will also remember to take note of Telus’ Samsung Galaxy Apollo! It is expected to catch up with the back to school season. This has been traced to a Samsung email sent to promote what they described as their lineup of Back to school products. The Pricing has not been announced yet but there is already some flesh for its description.

Nexus One 2.2

Android 2.2 nexus source code (well not really just for the nexus one but is a nice thought) went live yesterday. Nexus one users will eventually be receiving over the air a fully compiled OTA version of 2.2 Froyo. It will be hitting small batches of Nexus one handsets version FRF83.

For those that are wanting to do a manual upload you can go to HERE and install it, but it only works currently for user who have build FRF50. Alternative you can try to type *#*#2432546#*#* this is the safest way to do so. After you can go to Settings > About phone > System updates and you should receive a notification to download the update. If for some reason you did not receive a notification please check under Settings > About phone > Build Number.

By no mean those this means that if you dint get it now, you will never get it. It just mean at this current moment the developer from Google are trying their best to update all the phones and soon as possible. I confident that Google has put them in a private cell… I mean room… and are not allowed to see their family and friends until they finish all the updates. Let all hope this the case so we can all have a Android 2.2 Froyo
